SWMMS 2026. LIFE RESTART opens up new perspectives for the circular economy. UNIME research
On the occasion of SWMMS 2026 Conference (Sustanaible Waste Management in Materials Science, held in Poznań, Poland, from 21 to 23 September 2026, Dr. Salim Brahimi, PhD student at the University of Messina and researcher within the LIFE RESTART project (Scientific Coordinator for UNIME: Prof. Annamaria Visco), presented the latest research findings through an oral presentation entitled “Valorization of Brewer’s Spent Grain as a Functional Biofiller for Sustainable Polymer Composites.”
The research focused on the valorization of Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG), a by-product of the agri-food industry, as a biofiller for the development of sustainable polymer biocomposites. Particular attention was devoted to the use of bio-based additives to improve interfacial adhesion, processability, and workability, supporting the potential industrial application of these materials. End-of-life options, including recycling and biodegradation, were also investigated in line with circular economy principles.
With approximately 225 international participants, the conference provided an important opportunity for scientific exchange and networking. The presentation generated interest and discussions on the potential applications, process scalability, technology transfer, and commercialization prospects of the materials developed within the LIFE RESTART project.
